I'm Allison McNair. The proverbial snake oil salesman is known as the smooth talker who's good at selling a product that more often than not falls short of what's promised. In the 1800's they sold elixirs and potions. Today, snake oil has been replaced by promises of get-rich-quick schemes and discounts on goods and services.
AARP NH recently conducted a statewide survey about the issues that matter most to people 50 plus -- consumer and investment fraud is one that rose to the top.
Joining me to address those issues are Tracy Culberson from the Consumer Protection Division of the NH Department of Justice and Jeff Spill from NH State Bureau of Securities.

There's a story we're going to share with you now - that demonstrates how vulnerable people can be to scams. Several years ago, Al and Susan McIlvene of Kittery Point, Maine loaned a substantial amount of money to FRM and its mortgage servicing arm - CL&M of Meredith, NH. As it turns out, both firms were operating a multi-million dollar Ponzi scheme, the largest of its kind in NH. I met with the couple at their home to hear what steps they took before lending the money and what advice they now have for other investors.
